D.I.Y. electrolyte recipes

While all electrolytes are muy importante, there are two that I want to give a special shoutout to:

  1. potassium: it's involved in muscle contractions - specifically "smooth muscles" (as opposed to the other two types - cardiac and skeletal). These "smooth muscles" exist along the lining of the hard and - most notably - the digestive system. It's also vital in the body's ability to produce and maintain energy states.
  2. sodium: overconsuming sodium is of course detrimental to our health via processed foods...but sodium is a key player in keeping our body fluids in a normal balance - especially the blood. it's constantly trying to balance every single cell's happiness levels to ensure we are at equilibrium. For example the volume of our blood becomes too high ("high blood pressure"), sensors in the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys detect the increases and force the kidneys to increase the release of sodium (via sweat or pee), thus returning blood volume to normal.

These beverages have all natural ingredients that you can whip up each morning, before / after a workout, or even after a hangover! Note that you're going to always want to start with 2 cups of water + 1/8 tsp (dash or two) of salt as your base.

1️⃣ L&L Electrolyte Bevvy

  • 2 cups of cold water
  • 1/8 tsp. of salt
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tablespoons of honey

Directions: Pour all the ingredients into a blender and blend the mixture until the honey is dissolved. Serve over ice / cold.

2️⃣ Coconut Green Tea Electrolyte Bevvy

  • 2 cups of cold water
  • 1/8 tsp. of salt
  • 1 Bag Green Tea
  • 8 Ounce Coconut Water
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Directions: Add tea bag to boiling water. Let steep for 2-3 minutes. Mix all other ingredients in cup. Add the tea to ingredient mixture. Serve over ice / cold.

**these can be served as fun mocktails, too! or even tossed in with some adult liquor ◡̈ **
