WHAT IS TRUE:
- Your brain runs primarily on glucose (a carbohydrate).
- The brain uses about 120 grams of glucose per day in a healthy adult at rest.
- That equals roughly 60% of the body’s daily glucose use.
- This is why the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for carbs is set at 130 grams/day for adults — that amount is based almost entirely on minimum brain needs.
Converting to “slices of bread”:
- One standard slice of sandwich bread has ~20 grams of carbohydrate.
- 120 grams ÷ 20 grams ≈ 6 slices of bread.

So...our brain does need the carb equivalent of about 6-7 slices of bread per day, though it doesn’t need to come from bread (fruit, vegetables, legumes, dairy, and whole grains all contribute).
