Ditching Coffee on an Empty Tumm

Why It Might Not Be the Best Start

Many of us have normalized grabbing a cup of joe first thing in the morning...and even skipping breakfast. Here's why drinking coffee on an empty tummy MIGHT NOT be the best combo....

[1] Stressed-Out Glands = Tired You

Coffee can overwork your adrenal glands, those responsible for energy and mood. Imagine them like overworked bees!

This can lead to "adrenal fatigue," which means they get lazy and don't produce enough energy, leaving you feeling tired and foggy.

Coffee boosts cortisol, and on an empty stomach, this spike can amplify anxiety, jitters, and potentially impact sleep and metabolism.

This repeated activation and release of stress hormones can trick your body into staying in a perpetually state of "fight or flight".

[2] Flushing Away Goodness:

Coffee acts like a natural "pee-more" drink, but it takes vitamins and minerals along for the ride.

This includes potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, and even Vitamin C. Think of it like throwing out the good stuff with the bad!

These lost nutrients are important for things like mood, energy, and even digestion. For example, zinc helps your stomach "churn" food properly, and coffee might mess with that.

[3] Not-So-Friendly Brew:

Coffee itself can be acidic, and your stomach isn't a big fan of extra acidity on an empty tummy. This can lead to discomfort, especially if you already have sensitive digestion.

Your stomach acid (called "Hydrochloric Acid" or "HCl" for short) is already extremely acidic...by ensuring the body has adequate zinc to create potent HCl is important...as well as limiting use of antacids that can actually dull stomach acid.

Remember: Everyone reacts differently to caffeine. If you don't experience any issues, enjoy your coffee! But if you feel jittery, tired, or have stomach troubles after that empty-stomach cup, consider having a small snack with it or switching to a later coffee break. Your body (and taste buds) will thank you!
